Artist statement
Aniwar Mamat (b. 1962 Kashgar, lives and works in Beijing) Beijing-based Aniwar Mamat is China's most famous Uighur contemporary visual
artist. His brother Aksar is China's most famous Uighur rock and roll musician.
After graduating from Beijing's Central Academy of Minorities, he became a full time
professor of art at Beijing's Central Academy of Fashion Design. Aniwar is well
known in China's contemporary art world, where he has been actively exhibiting
since the 1990's. Aniwar was a pioneer in developing an abstract painting
language, using traditional Uighur color palettes and motifs to create his unique
visual language. Today, he not only continues his painting practice, but also takes his abstract painting language on to traditional pressed wool felt tapestries. Works from Aniwar's "Tapestry Painting" series are collected by Swire Properties; SWATCH Watch Group in Switzerland, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne and others.
