Artist statement
'The Tree' is an iconic work by Aung Myint based on his study of Myanmar calligraphy, and deeply-rooted in his memories of a very tall Gangaw tree that stood at the Rangoon University of Arts and Science campus. The tree had been a symbol of identification for the students of the prestigious university in the 1950s, and also a personal symbol of artistic expression for the then student of Industrial Psychology. This impressive painting is the result of spontaneous brushwork by the artist, working subconsciously with curves, dots and lines, and discovering the result at the end of his intensive painting session.
