Artist statement
"Red Shoes"
November 2023
Inspired by the literary fairy tale by Danish poet and author Hans Christian Andersen first published in Copenhagen in 1845.
Karen, a vain girl who wears her red shoes to church, is condemned to dance in these shoes till even after her death.
She asks an executioner to chop off her feet. He does so; however, the shoes continue to dance, even with Karen's amputated feet inside them.
Thinking that she has suffered enough for the red shoes, Karen decides to go to church so people can see her. Yet her amputated feet, still in the red shoes, dance before her, barring the way.
In the background we see the ruins of an abandoned church.
It is a detail of a photo I took on my travels in 2019 of a destroyed church in Bihac, Bosnia .
It is in this church that the red shoes took root.
Unique artwork.
'Red Shoes' is a mixed composition on canvas.
Transfer collage, paper collage and oil paint.
