Artist statement
The Cave is a sculpture by Oskar Zięta from 2016, the result of his experiments with form and colour. The sculpture consists of nine overlapping elements that form a kaleidoscopic structure. Its successive layers - shiny rectangular panels with irregular oval openings - resemble visualizations of overlapping parallel dimensions of reality. They are seemingly identical, but there are slight, barely noticeable modifications that determine their final form and meaning.
The groove in the centre of the relief is the sum of overlapping curves that create an effect resembling organic mineral structures. It is also intensified by the gradient treatment of the colours of individual steel panes, ranging from juicy turquoise, through delicate sapphire, to deep green.
Zięta's works are synonymous with a futuristic approach to the form and properties of the material. In his designs, cold steel becomes light, and the objects created with it refer to the world of nature. The mirror surfaces of his sculptures deform the image of the world and force the viewer to adopt a new perspective of seeing reality. In the case of The Cave, the mirror theme is accompanied by a multiplication of shapes and a painterly approach to colour.
