About the art
Artist statement
There are inevitably contradictions between the global expansion of cities and the environment . While many leave the rural area for cities in search of greater opportunities, there is a certain nostalgia for the natural landscapes they leave behind. As cities expand, the growing sprawl offers controlled representations of nature. Fake rocks, mountains and rivers build the illusion that we are still surrounded by nature. Yet ironically, this sprawl creates environmental degradation as a result. These works represent the clash through intentional use of colors and forms. Repetitive marks, busy texture, bright saturated colors show the chaotic transformation of urban life.
From one angle the fragile form may be reminiscent of organic shapes like corals, yet the alien colors accentuate human intervention in nature. But from another perspective one might see heavy and sharp manmade architecture with soft natural colors. Each perspective provokes new insights from the viewer. The chaos that emerges between the heavy angular control of urban life is juxtaposed with delicate organic expansion. Harsh monolithic geometries jut out into slowly decaying organic forms pockmarked with corruption. Like flowers that sprout from solid rocks and slowly spread, the series captures the frozen moment of blossoming in opposition to manmade constraints and the harmony that emerge in the uncontrolled chaos.
