Exclusive Drawings by Daniel Arsham for the Fari Art Atelier
ByIsabella DamrongkulNew York-based artist Daniel Arsham just completed his residency at the Fari Art Atelier, a collaboration between Patina Maldives and The Artling. The Fari Art Atelier is a series of art residencies bringing acclaimed artists to the island to create artworks and engage with the unique surroundings. The awe-inspiring surroundings and the seclusive, remote nature of Patina Maldives are key to nurturing artists’ creativity in which their artistic process guides guests of the island on an uplifting journey of productive thought. Each residency includes interactive sessions and a closer view of the creative processes of some of the world’s greatest contemporary artists.
This past March, Daniel Arsham, an interdisciplinary artist whose artistic practice goes beyond traditional art, was on the island creating a series of exclusive drawings for the residency. His art refrains from conforming to conventional narratives and focuses on the concept of future history and fictional archaeology. Though he often presents his ideas as sculptures, during his residency, Arsham returned to his roots in drawing. It was this medium that kept the artist’s creativity alive during the pandemic when access to his studio was halted. The drawings presented in this exhibition are studies for upcoming and ongoing series in his practice, including works from the Pokémon series, Classical Cave paintings, and other new bodies of work that will be debuted in 2022.

The Classical Cave series presents ancient sculptural forms, with the classical works drawn from Arsham’s collaboration with RMN-Grand Palais. This collaboration gave him access to historical objects which he then used to apply his signature decay and ageing aesthetics.
