Ever since she was a young girl, Nissa Kinzhalina loved to study the wide-open spaces of Kazakhstan’s steppe. She spent her days inventing imaginary worlds while sketching new realities in her mind.
Through these observations, she developed a unique form of spatial awareness that allows her to imagine physical objects and how they look from different angles, even if those objects don’t yet exist.
After studying Japanese architecture at university, Kinzhalina launched her own furniture brand. In 2015, she participated in her first design exhibition in Moscow, displaying her iconic Urban Philosophy Chair. The exhibition was a great success.
Today, Kinzhalina employs the Japanese concept yugen, meaning inner duality, to tell unique stories through design. The profile will detail Kinzhalina’s journey from a small town in northeastern Kazakhstan to become one of the country’s only independent female entrepreneurs. Nissa Kinzhalina exhibited her works in Moscow, Milan, Paris, London, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.
What inspires you?
For me, inspiration is not a result of an activity, its a life-long process. Life inspires me and everything that it has to offer. People who make me notice new shapes, forms, angles and build upon it inspire me. Success and failure, pain and joy, love and hate, life in all its manifestations inspire me.
Describe your creative process.
First, a phrase simmers in my head, I let the object live in my thoughts, in my brain. I reflect a lot, almost meditate about the object and try to understand what is it that I am trying to create. After all my thoughts and ideas settle I create 3D visualizations.
What are 3 words that best describe your work?
Resistance, aspiration/pursuit, tension
Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
People of different professions and from different spheres impact me every day. For instance, Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, Hungarian film-maker Béla Tarr, American fashion designer Rick Owens, and Brazilian photographer Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado.
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
Music
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
Strangely, I almost never get advice from people. Probably most of people in my closest network know that I do not like unsolicited advice. The best lesson in life for me are my actions and the actions of people around me. Spoken words can sometimes be misinterpreted and misunderstood.
Where do you go for inspiration?
Sometimes, when I desperately lack beauty and inspiration in my surroundings, I watch arthouse movies or travel to a country where I can visit a museum of modern art.
