Some places have a soul, an extra spark.
After meandering up the mountain road, leaving the dramatic valley of Rjukan below, the plateau unfolds with Gaustatoppen rising above.
Peaking 1883 meters high, Gaustatoppen is the highest peak in Telemark. On a clear day, it's possible to see 1/6 of Norway from here. Around 30000 people make the trip to the summit every year to enjoy the top's fantastic views. From the top, it offers various off-piste opportunities.
I took this picture in mid-winter near Kvitåvatn lake. That morning the weather conditions were particularly favorable for photographing, except for the cold. I remember that I left my hut early before the sunrise. After finding the spot that I had scouted the day before, I enjoyed shooting during that short but magical blue hour.
"Snowy Gaustatoppen" is part of GAUSTA IN SEASONS: an award-winning project that has documented this world-class mountain Norwegian destination from December 2019 to September 2020.
