Jo Moloney is an artist based in Melbourne, Australia. Her hard-edged geometric abstractions reflect on the legacy of twentieth century modernist traditions, part art history, part imagined history, where she reworks utopic and universal formations into discreet, obsessive, and often very personal paintings.
Jo has a background in commercial photography, where her eye for composition and technical acuity led her to work on film and television sets as a unit stills photographer. Her photographs have been featured in Marie Claire magazine and formed the backbone of marketing campaigns for Australian artists and bands, and published in The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, Vault and Island magazine.
What inspires you?
My practice explores art historical legacies within a fugitive modernist framework, where the conventions of mid-century hard-edged abstraction are pulled apart and reworked.
Describe your creative process.
It's difficult for me to define my processes as so much of what I do operates under my own radar. But, what I can say with certainty is that I persist until what I'm looking at feels right. This is not done on the canvas, but during the initial design phase where I spend hours at the computer endlessly adjusting my designs.
