I have enjoyed a long and successful career as a graphic designer, but have always had a passion for art and image making. My creative process spans both disciplines and, alongside my digital work, I now paint abstract landscapes.
My approach to painting echoes the principles of successful graphics – visual storytelling through symmetry, colour, balance, and the spaces in between. I create abstract paintings based on the landscape around me. Painting in oils, I layer and blend various shapes of colours to recreate an emotional response to the starting image of a place I have been. I love the push and pull of oil paints and the process of an image evolving on the canvas. Sometimes the outcome is expected. Other times it’s not.
Alongside my paintings, I create complementary digital prints that are at once a reflection of the original piece – and a new perspective on it. After photographing a section of a finished painting, I reimagine the work in Photoshop; blending, blurring and rebalancing to create a run of limited-edition prints.
I work from my own studio in North London and it’s very much a studio of two halves. One side houses the painting and physical creating area whilst the other half is my digital space. I work on projects concurrently. My paintings inform my prints and my prints inspire my paintings.
Describe your creative process.
I photograph elements of the natural world around me, for example light coming through the trees. Within photoshop I manipulate the photos until I create the basis of a mood I’d like to paint. Then begins the interaction of the paint with the canvas and my thoughts and feelings. I paint in oils, layering and blending various shapes of colours to recreate an emotional response to the starting image. My digital work is complimentary to my paintings. After photographing part of a finished painting, I reimagine the work in Photoshop; blending, blurring and rebalancing to create limited-edition giclée prints.

Walks in the local woods and nature reserve with my dog Elvis. And my camera.
