As part of Singapore Art Week, Capella Singapore was delighted to partner with Shanghai Tang and Art SG to present an exclusive, by-invite-only Black Tie Sarong and Chinoiserie Soirée—a celebration of artistry, culture, and community that took place last Friday, 17 January 2025 at the hotel’s alfresco Portico, adjacent to the Grand Ballroom. This extraordinary event underscores Capella Singapore’s dedication to being a cornerstone of Singapore’s dynamic art scene, with over 900 commissioned art pieces located within the hotel.

The evening honoured regional artists and collectors, offering guests an immersive journey through art, music, and design. The impressive backdrop at Portico was the striking 12.27-metre by 7.89-metre wall mural by renowned artist and professional surfer Otis Hope Carey. Titled Gaagal, this evocative masterpiece is Carey’s largest public installation to date, paying tribute to his rich heritage. The mural, a testament to meticulous craftsmanship, was completed over 45 hours with the help of an assistant.

The evening’s entertainment was equally captivating, where guests were treated to a set by Tom Yeti, Shanghai-based deejay and creative director of Yeti Out and record label Silk Road Sounds. In a rare appearance, visual artist, filmmaker, and storyteller Korakrit Arunanondchai — who navigates his time between Brooklyn and Bangkok — brought his distinctive perspective to the turntables. The night culminated with a high-energy set by Alex Turnbull, co-founder of the United Kingdom’s pioneering hip-hop label Ronin Records who is known to perform for luminaries such as Madonna and Kate Moss.
Complementing this visual centrepiece were floral art installations by botanical design studio - Humid House, known for championing the entire spectrum of plant life that Singapore’s climate is able to sustain with a particular affection for the unusual.
