Nozomi Fujii is a ceramic artist who mainly works on designed vases. She grew up in the quiet town of Kuwana, Japan. During her childhood, she was fascinated with the idea of creation and its systematic planning throughout the process, which eventually became the starting point of her career as a ceramic artist.
She studied ceramic art at Tokoname City Municipal Ceramic Art Laboratory. She has been participating in both domestic solo & group exhibitions since 2009.
In 2020, she was invited to 1000 VASES in Paris.
What makes Nozomi laying emphasis on using pottery wheels for her works is the absolute limitation. This limitation is born from its concentric movement that only allows her to shape clay symmetrical. She is fascinated by the process of creating beautiful shapes within the limitation.
She does not use glaze in order to bring out natural colors as well as a character of original texture from the clay. By doing so, the artist can extract the primitive sense of ancient times from the clay, and visualize them in a modern style.
Her works bring a refined sense and tranquility to the space.
What inspires you?
I get inspiration from many things around myself. Especially, architecture and natural science have become an important source of my ideas.
Describe your creative process.
My design work is based on the accumulation of my past experiences and emotion, and inspiration. They are assembled systematically in order to form their shapes before I begin my actual clay work.
What are 3 words that best describe your work?
tranquility, resonance, minimalism
Who are some artists that have influenced your work?
Alberto Giacometti, Constantin Brancusi, Leonard da Vinci, Hans Coper, Tadao Ando, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Naoto Fukasawa
What is the most important tool when creating your work?
pottery wheel and my hands
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
" Those who go slowly go far. " (Qui vas longtemps, qui vas loin.) I need a lot of time to make my works through the sequence of trials. The today's fast trend sometimes asks me for a quick response, and it is hard for me to catch up with. It also makes me nervous, too. I’m always relieved by this French saying that my friend had told me before.
Where do you go for inspiration?
Museum, Art Museum, Art Gallery, Somewhere outside my living area
