Hong Kong Art Week 2019 Highlights

Across Hong Kong last week, 307 galleries from across the world showcased at blockbuster art fairs Art Basel Hong Kong and Art Central. However, that wasn't to say that the Hong Kong art world wasn't just as exciting outside of those fairs. Openings were plenty, with galleries across the country exhibiting showstopping exhibitions.  Here are some of our highlights from Hong Kong Art Week 2019:

Flying in the Fragmentary

Yavuz Gallery is proud to present Flying in the Fragmentary, the first solo exhibition of Myanmar artist Nge Lay with the gallery. The exhibition opens on 23 June in conjunction with Gillman Barracks’ Art Day Out – The School Holidays Edition. THE CLUB is pleased to announce “Released Existence on Edges” a solo exhibition by Kishio Suga, one of the leading members of the Mono-ha art movement. This exhibition is held as a retrospective, with the artist's works ranging from the 1980s to 2016. Suga's work freely employs various materials (“mono”) by which he creates a space (“ku-kan”) that interacts with the presence of those materials.

Perrotin Seoul is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Chinese artist Xu Zhen, featuring major works spanning the development of his flagship art brand, XU ZHEN®, since 2013. Using both conceptual and pop strategies, Xu Zhen’s practice mounts incongruous clashes between iconographies pertaining to distant cultures, civilizations and ages to question the loss of context induced by globalization. Ironically mirroring post-Mao China’s journey into consumerism, Xu transforms himself into a brand with the creation of his art corporation “MadeIn Company” in 2009 as a behavioral – and almost performative – study of the symmetries between ideas, art and business.

An exhibition of newly commissioned and existing work by internationally renowned artists will go on show this April at the acclaimed and recently opened Duddell’s in London as part of a new art programme of curated exhibitions and special art events.  Having achieved critical acclaim from respected food critics in its opening months, Duddell’s London has now announced the launch of its art programme which is supported by Perrier-Jouët as Principal Art Patron. Much like its Hong Kong counterpart, the Co-founders of Duddell’s would like the first UK outpost to become a cultural and social destination as well as a meeting point for those passionate about food and the arts.
