The Artling Appointed Art Consultant for Capella Sydney!

Capella Hotels and Resorts has just announced the highly anticipated opening of its first Australian property in March 2023. Capella Sydney is the culmination of a stunning transformation of the heritage-listed Department of Education Building into a luxury hotel that will welcome guests and patrons for the first time in the building's history. The Artling is thrilled to be involved in the project as the appointed art consultant, which will involve an Australian-focused collection.  The Artling's Director Talenia Phua Gajardo, says "Australia is full to the brim with talented artists and this project is an amazing opportunity to showcase many of these creatives throughout the various spaces of these sprawling heritage properties. It is so great to be working with the visionary team at Pontiac Land Group again - we all have a clear vision of integrating the important history of the building with the new life it will take on, with art playing an extremely vital role in its identity." Occupying an entire city block, encircled by Loftus, Bridge, and Young Streets, this historic building is nestled in close proximity to Sydney's commercial, arts, and cultural districts and at the heart of Sydney's latest retail and hospitality precinct. Paying homage to the city's rich history, the re-imagined stylish and contemporary interiors juxtapose the old-world heritage charm, creating a serene atmosphere and a peaceful escape from the bustling surrounds of Circular Quay and the northern Sydney CBD.

Interview: Shasha Tittmann on Her Perspectives on the Asian Art Market

Shasha Tittmann is the Director of the internationally renowned gallery Lehmann Maupin. The gallery was founded by Rachel Lehmann and David Maupin 1996, and they represent a diverse range of contemporary artists and estates from around the world. Since its inception, Lehmann Maupin has been instrumental in introducing international artists to new geographies. This mission has resulted in historic first exhibitions in New York, Hong Kong, and Seoul. The gallery opened its newest location in London in October 2020. Shasha has been managing the gallery's branch in Hong Kong since 2017 and focuses on working with collectors and institutions in Asia. She has held positions at Tang Contemporary Art (Hong Kong and Beijing) and Opera Gallery (Hong Kong). She earned a Bachelor of Arts in art history from McGill University in Montreal, Canada.  This week, The Artling had the opportunity to speak to Shasha about her experience as a gallerist and her perspectives on the future of the art market in Asia.

The Artling at LIAIGRE, Singapore: A Solo Exhibition by Shih Yun Yeo

In collaboration with Liaigre Singapore, The Artling is thrilled to announce an exhibition by acclaimed Singaporean artist Shih Yun Yeo. Known for her reinterpretations of ink paintings and her experimental fusion of the traditional form, Shih Yun Yeo’s artworks fit harmoniously into Liaigre’s showroom interiors where her art will be the centre of any dialogue. With Liaigre’s mission to share meaningful experiences as well as provide a meeting place for artists, collectors and private customers, Yeo’s dynamic works create a space in which the contemporary spirit thrives. The exhibition is on view from 3 February 2022, Monday to Saturday, 10am to 7pm at Liaigre Singapore, 9 Purvis Street, 01-01.

Interview: Teo Yang on His Elegant Design Philosophy

Teo Yang is the founder of Teo Yang Studio, a design studio that specialises in high-end residential and branding commercial projects, with an emphasis on modern architecture and custom detailing. His studio aims to bring a fresh approach to elegant, tailored interiors through the cohesive blend of traditional and contemporary elements. His mix of high art and personal treasures creates moments of timeless beauty in these spaces. He began his career traveling and working in many vibrant cities, such as Amsterdam, Berlin and L.A, designing luxury interiors for boutique hotels and homes. After many years of learning and creating in these beautiful cities, he returned to Seoul and opened his studio in 2009. Over the course of his career, Teo has worked on interior design projects all over South Korea, some of which have been featured in Vogue Living, Elle Decor, and Lemon Tree magazine. He has also had the opportunity to work for and learn from the legendary designer Marcel Wanders. This week, The Artling had the opportunity to speak to Teo Yang on his how his cultural experiences have shaped his projects, Seoul's local craftsmanship, and his personal art collection.

Announcing Daniel Arsham's Residency at Patina Maldives, Fari Islands

Patina Maldives & The Artling are thrilled to announce that acclaimed artist Daniel Arsham will be doing an art residency on the Fari Islands from 1 to 7 March 2022. Featuring never-before-seen art pieces on the island, Arsham -- who has collaborated with the likes of Pharrell Williams, Kim Jones of Christian Dior and Tiffany & Co -- will share his creative process with the guests of the island during his intimate residency as well as an exclusive Open Studio session on March 3, an Art Talk on March 4, and a 25-seater Private Group Dinner on March 5 where guests will be able to personally engage with the artist.

tobyato Unveils His Latest Mural on Duxton Hill

Singaporean artist Toby Tan, better known as tobyato makes a statement with his largest vertical mural to date in the bustling neighbourhood of Tanjong Pagar. Inspired by the history of Tanjong Pagar as a fishing village, the mural pays homage to a Singapore Malay tale of the battle between local villagers and swordfish led by a heroic young boy, Hang Nadim. By using stems from banana trees, Hang Nadim combated charging swordfish and protected the villagers from the attack. Emblazoned on the building are two swordfish swimming in a pool of abstract waves. One of them has its snout pierced into a banana stem, a direct reference to how the villagers defeated the attack of the swordfish. In collaboration with 8M Real Estate, this bold and eye-catching mural adds more life and character to an already full-spirited area, serving as a reminder of the city’s rich history to its dwellers.  The Artling speaks more with Toby on his mural and plans for the future.
