Asia Art Archive's Annual Fundraiser 2022

Asia Art Archive's Annual Fundraiser 2022

Asia Art Archive (AAA) returns with their annual fundraiser from 19 October - 3 November 2022 with an auction of over fifty works, generously donated by artists, galleries, estates, and individuals. This auction supports free public access to programmes, education, and research about important histories of contemporary art in Asia. This year AAA expanded and upgraded its physical library to accommodate its growing collections and support more diverse programming. The fundraiser is therefore an essential source of funding for AAA to continue building collections on histories of contemporary art in Asia, as well as to provide free public access to resources and programmes for research and education. This fundraiser and auction is in partnership with Christie's Hong Kong. A preview of the artworks on auction will be open to the public from 19 - 21 October and bidding will be available online from 19 October - 3 November.

Art Day Out: Gillman Barracks Celebrates their 10th Anniversary!

Art Day Out: Gillman Barracks Celebrates their 10th Anniversary!

On 24 September, Gillman Barracks will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary! Ten years since the development of the space as an arts precinct, ten art galleries, non-profit organisation Art Outreach, and the National Technological University Centre for Contemporary Art will be commemorating Singapore's contemporary arts cluster with a host of exhibition openings, tours, and other programmes.  A decade before, 13 galleries launched their maiden exhibitions in the area this time of the year, signalling the launch of a new contemporary art cluster in Singapore. Identified by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) as a site for the arts with its unique traits, the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), JTC Corporation (JTC), and the National Arts Council (NAC) jointly developed the site to be an international destination for contemporary art. Now established as a distinctive destination where contemporary art meets colonial history against the backdrop of nature in the surrounding secondary forest, Gillman Barracks continues to position itself as a one-of-a-kind enclave in Singapore. Its presence as an arts precinct also saw the rise of other arts clusters across the island, pointing to an increasingly vibrant arts scene that has seen more galleries, museums, and independent art spaces pop up over the years. This milestone of the first ten years is a noteworthy effort by the various stakeholders, especially in a land-scarce nation with many other priorities to balance with.  Scroll down to see some of the highlights!  Mizuma Gallery

Samson Young's Upcoming Solo Exhibition at Kiang Malingue

Samson Young's Upcoming Solo Exhibition at Kiang Malingue

Kiang Malingue will be presenting Samson Young's first solo exhibition from 24 September to 5 November at the gallery's Hong Kong space. The exhibition is titled "Music for selective hearing, or assisted living" and will feature five sets of artworks created by the artist in the last two years. Known for exploring the fabric of the sociopolitical by examining the history and contemporary conditions of sound and music, Samsom considers the complicated nature of "sound conditioning" - the active control of ambient sounds exemplified by devices such as white-noise sleep aids - as self-care and recuperation as well as self-imposed isolation, control, and wilful disengagement.

Interview: Jan Ernst on His Journey as a Designer

Jan Ernst is a multidisciplinary creative specializing in functional art and spatial design using clay as his main medium. The work is driven by his fascination with natural structures such as corals, fungi, and rock formations. His organic designs stem from his abstract understanding of form and space influenced by his background in architecture, his connection with the natural world, and his South African heritage.  This week, we had the opportunity to speak to Jan to learn more about his journey as a designer, his inspirations, and vision for the future!
