Online Artling Exclusive: The Papercut Portfolio by Ai WeiWei

The Artling is pleased to present an online exclusive of Ai WeiWei's limited edition papercut portfolio of eight papercuts, each signed by the artist himself. Papercutting is a traditional Chinese art going back 2,000 years. The colored, intricately cut papers are used as a story-telling medium in festivities, for prayers, and as everyday decoration. In this Collector’s Edition of 250 copies, Ai WeiWei employs the medium to reflect on his life and work in eight papercuts. Meticulously cut in large-format, colored fine-art paper, each papercut is signed by the artist and comes with explanatory notes by Chin-Chin Yap, who has extensively worked with Ai WeiWei, most recently as a writer and co-producer on several films. Through these eight pieces, Ai offers a beautiful, personal retrospective in a unique format. Scroll down to take a look at Ai WeiWei's limited edition portfolio. The papercuts are sold as a set of 8, and we have one final set available exclusively online on The Artling:

Brilliance in Blue - What are Cyanotypes?

Brilliance in Blue - What are Cyanotypes?

Cyanotypes are one of the oldest photographic printing processes in the history of photography. The distinctive feature of the print is its shade of cyan blue, which results from its exposure to ultraviolet light. When the blue print emerged, cyanotypes were traditionally used for reproducing the technical drawings of architects and engineers until the arrival of photocopy machines. However, with its versatility and affordability, the technique was adopted by photographers soon after its discovery. The early days of photography were characterised by monochromatic prints such as the Daguerreotype and Calotype, and thus the brilliant blue hue of the cyanotype made a striking entrance when it was introduced in a world of albumen and silver gelatin prints.
